Unfortunatly, the classroom I am in at Bugbee does not offer much use in the technology area. Luckily my classroom teacher, Mrs. DiPietro, is supposed to be getting a smart board very soon! I am hoping that I will be there when the smart board arrives to get a better understanding and gain knowledge of the technology. Besides a smart board, the children are able to use other types of technology throughout the day. During their free time, the children are able to use the computer (their favorite being Microsoft Paint), use the CD player and are sometimes shown videos based on their unit of study. Once a week, the students go to Library for an hour where they spend half of the time on the computer searching through and for various things and the other half of the time they are able to read books and follow instructions from the librarian.
Tompkins talks a lot about incorporating technology into daily lessons, not only with computers but with the use of video tapes, CD-ROMS, DVD's etc. I agree with Tompkins and am really for the different uses of technology within the classroom. I feel like since the world is surrounded by the use of computers and different types of technology, its important to be up to date on everything and broaden our knowledge of the world around us.

I amin a classroom at smith and my class does has a smart board. Do not get frustated when trying to learn how to use. A suggestion would be to have the teacher and students learn together. There is also a web site that you can go to and download smartboard material onto your home computer. Through this you can get a sense of how the program works and might be able to assist your teacher when trying to learn how to use it. Another suggestion would be to use it as much as possible. You have to almost play around with it to get a sense of what it is capable of.
Though I have seen Smartboards in classrooms, I have yet to see one in use. I'll be interested to hear about the learning curve.
I as well do not have much technology in the classroom I am working in. We have chalk boards and an overhead projector. Our computers even seem out dated to me! I have never worked on a smart board and would like to before I start teaching myself. The teacher next door to my classroom has one so I may ask for a short lesson sometime just to get myself familiar with the technology. It seems fairly simply but I would only feel comfortable giving a lesson on it if i have used it and familiarized myself with it prior to the lesson. I am a person who needs to practice and do a run through with things so that I do not make a fool of myself! I like the idea of being able to download the instructions onto a home computer, but I still need the hands on experience to better myself with it.
